The SMC residence visa is granted for 24 months initially and can be converted to a PR with ease after successfully settling in New Zealand.

To apply under the Skilled Migrant Category New Zealand, you must meet the basic requirements. You need to be aged 55 or under. You also have to meet the NZ standards of health, character, and English language proficiency. 

• You must meet at least 100 points to lodge your expression of interest. However, applications that meet 140 will get selected automatically.
• Points will be granted for Age, skilled employment or Job offer in New Zealand, Recognized Qualifications, and Spouse recognized qualifications, bonus points for Qualifications& experience in Absolute skills shortage areas and identified future growth areas, close family or relative in New Zealand, Qualifications from New Zealand and additional years of experience from New Zealand.
• If you do not have current employment or Job offer from New Zealand, must require to have experience in the areas of Absolute skills shortage or Comparable labor market countries to claim points on experience.
• Every fortnight a POOL draw will happen and all selected applications will be sent invitations, an application for residence must be made within 4 months.
• Based on the assessment a Residence visa (2 yrs. residence) or a Job Search visa (9 months) can be granted. Work to residence can be converted by updating the department with a Job offer. 

 Application Process 

Basic Requirements to apply 

To apply under the Skilled Migrant Category New Zealand, you must meet the basic requirements. You need to be aged 55 or under. You also have to meet the NZ standards of health, character, and English language proficiency before you start the process. 

Expression of Interest
This is the first step towards making an application. If you qualify and meet the required threshold points of 100-140, you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), in which you claim points for skills, experience, and other factors.

EOI pool and the pool draw
If you have claimed 100 points or more on your EOI, it goes into the Pool. Every fortnight, there is a pool draw and all selected EOI’s will get Invitation to apply.
All non-selected application can still remain in the pool for at least 6 months and can be sent invitations based on the requirement. If you are not receiving a response within the 6 months of application made date your application is considered as ceased.

Invitation to Apply
Once your EOI is drawn from the pool; NZ will examine it and if they find it credible, you will be send an Invitation to Apply (ITA). You will have to show proof of the claims made on your EOI. 

Full assessment
The application for a residence visa must be made anytime within the 4 months from the date of invitation received in response to the EOI submitted.

Once they receive your application and documents towards the residence visa, they will start assessing your application for residence.

 * If your qualifications are not listed in the recognized institutes exempted from assessment, you need a Pre-assessment result to file your EOI application and upon approval must get the International qualifications assessment completed. Y-Axis will do this for you.

What if the process, if I get married during the Resident visa process?

Before you make the Resident Visa Application along with your partner or spouse, you need to prove that you are in a relationship and have been living together for last 12 months or more. Otherwise it is advisable that you to apply for Partnership Work Visa.

How long client I have to keep Resident Visa valid or what is the extension period after initial 24 month?
Residence visa granted will allow you work and settle in NZ for at least 24 months and travel indefinitely. After completing 24 months you will be eligible to apply for a Permanent resident visa considering you were a resident for a total of 184 days or more in each of the two 12-month portions of the 24 months immediately preceding the permanent resident visa application.
